Gardening Jargon – Deadheading

Removing faded flowers from plant is called dead heading.

How to do it ?
Pinch or cut off the flower stem below the spent flower

Why to do it?
It keeps energy on the flowers, resulting in healthier plants and continued bloom. Or, say for a beautiful looking garden :).

Which season?
You can do it when you see some faded flowers or later in spring

Following plants give good result after dead-heading

  • Bleeding heart
  • Phlox
  • Delphinium
  • Lupine
  • Sage
  • Salvia
  • Veronica
  • Shasta daisy
  • Yarrow
  • Coneflower
