Home made seed growing kit

Here are quick steps for home made seed growing kit for beginners

1.  I use grocery plastic containers as shown below which gives me around 2-4 inch of depth. or if you are environment savvy,  Replace it with paper pot

I use above container for seeds like marigold, black eye susan, Tulsi (Holy Basil) as the size of seed is very small and weight is negligible.

You can use paper towel, sprinkle some water on it , wrap the seed around the towel and place it in ziplock bag. This setup becomes handy when the temperature outside is not favourable and you want to make sure if seed will grow before you plant them in soil.

2. To create moist environment for seeds I plan to use plastic bags(recyclable), easily available when you buy vegetables in grocery shop and rubber bands as shown below

You can always choose to use standard gardening tools and seed starting pots and kits available in shops. As a novice I am just trying my hands with available material at home.

Regarding soil, experts recommend to use “germinating mix” or “organic seed starting mix” so it gives the right growth condition to seed to germinate. Word of caution is to avoid using garden soil for seed. The key is to keep seeds out of reach of insects and diseases.

I use “Miracle Grow – potting mix” as a starter .
